Illustration & Drawing

Our resident artist, Nancy was already an accomplished painter, drawer and sculptor before she ever touched a computer. Now, she works easily with Photoshop and InDesign, but her real love is Adobe Illustrator. She takes pen-and-paper drawings — her own or from others — and converts them to Illustrator artwork.

The image to the left is a good example of Nancy's work. The client wanted artwork to be cut from metal using an industrial laser controlled by AutoCad. He wanted the artwork to reflect Florida and the Caribbean area, since the finished product would be installed in yachts made in Florida. Nancy provided some sketches, and the client chose this one. In the finished product, the black areas are metal, and the white areas are cut out. Every solid part had to be connected to the rest of the structure to avoid dropping out, and the Illustrator file is drawn to make sure every element is connected to another element.

Here are some more samples of Nancy's designs. The first incorporates a stylized palm tree in the top half. Three duplicates of the tree face left, right and down in the pattern. The second drawing is one of several huckleberry designs Nancy created. Huckleberries taste great, but the plants aren't particularly attractive. Nancy's designs improve the natural look while remaining true to the basic form. The two rectangular designs are registers (vent covers) for custom homes.
